Adidas Goukana Yellow JP7177 Release Date

In addition to Pharrell’s Jellyfish, Adidas has another chunky sneaker ready to light up the lifestyle scene.

The Adidas Goukana will release before the end of the week with an upper inspired by a marathon sneaker from 2008 and a pillowy sole unit offering modern cushioning. With a name translating to “luxurious and plush” from Japanese, the Goukana molds Lightstrike foam into a bulbous form intended to suit baggy pants while providing the same comfort as some of Adidas’ top running and basketball silhouettes.

The upper then borrows many of its lines from the Adios Neftenga, a classic running shoe brought back for a Wales Bonner collaboration last year. Also carrying over from the 2017 shoe is the bright yellow colorway, which is the same one worn by Haile Gebrselassie when he shaved 27 seconds off of his own world record at the Berlin Marathon. It’s rendered in suede and mesh, and synthetic detailing is applied in reflective silver.

Designed in Adidas’ New Los Angeles headquarters, the Goukana features the city’s name on the lace tips, as well as an “OG L.A.” tag on the inner tongue.

“Goukana is a directional move for the brand — it’s where 20 years of heritage innovation meets streetwear refinement that is unmistakably Originals,” Federico Maccapani, Adidas Originals senior footwear designer, told Footwear News in an email in May. “We’re running our own race. It’s not about following trends, but about setting our own direction. This silhouette proves that performance DNA and lifestyle relevance can coexist — without compromise. It signals that Adidas is designing for the informed, not the influenced.”

Later in August, Adidas will also release Pharrell Williams’ long-awaited Jellyfish collaborative model, which adds exaggerated proportions to another 2000s runner, the AdiStar Cushion.

The Adidas Goukana will release Friday through Adidas’ website and flagships. Pricing is set at $160.
