Crowd of 400,000 Chants ‘Free Palestine’ at Rapper Reside…
Puerto Rican rapper and singer Residente, formerly of Calle 13, held a free concert in Mexico City on Saturday (Sept. 6) attended by 180,000 fans, and 400,000 including those who tuned in digitally.
A highlight of the event came when the hip-hop artist invited onstage members of the Abed family, Palestinian refugees from Gaza who came to Mexico in May.
Per a press release, hundreds of thousands of spectators chanted, “Free Palestine!” in protest of ongoing Israeli attacks in the region.
The event was among the largest ever held at the Zócalo, a famous square in the city’s historical district, according to the press release. Hundreds of thousands fans reportedly attended in person and online via livestream.
Mexican singer-songwriter Silvana Estrada joined Residente onstage for a performance of Calle 13’s “Latinoamérica,” a 2010 song with more than 238 million listens on YouTube.
At the concert, put on by the Mexico City Ministry of Culture as part of its lineup of free and public cultural events, Residente also performed “Darle la Vuelta al Mundo,” “René,” and “This Is Not America.”
