New Balance Numeric 770 Release Date NM770
New Balance is dipping into its archives to give not a second, but a third life to one of its forgotten early 1990s sneaker models.
First introduced in the early ‘90s as the CXT770, the New Balance 770 was originally meant to be a cross-training shoe equipped to tackle a variety of athletic pursuits. However, the durable and supportive mid-top silhouette, designed by Jonathan Morris, was instead repositioned as a tennis shoe with the Boston-based athletic manufacturer touting its court stability. After being repurposed by the brand once, the 770 is back 30 years later, this time with a brand new purpose.
For 2025, the 770 lands under the New Balance Numeric skateboarding arm. From a glance, the model is largely unchanged: it has the same sleek, yet stout shape and signature details including its TPU stability wing and heel counter. But internally, the 770 has been given a restomod-like upgrade which includes the brand’s top-of-the-line FuelCell foam, reinforced toe cabs and rubber soles and a more generous overall fit.

While the 770 is technically built for skateboarding, New Balance is also marketing the shoe as a lifestyle model. A press release from the brand states the shoe is “ready for the street, court and gym,” and based on early social media reactions, the 770’s likelihood of catching on as an everyday lifestyle option isn’t far-fetched.
The relaunch of the 770 is reminiscent of New Balance’s 2020 reissue of the 550 basketball sneaker. Both models were culled from comparable eras and feature similar mid-top designs. It remains to be seen if the 770 will be able to generate the levels of hype that surrounded the 550.
The New Balance Numeric 770 will debut Monday in the gray/black/purple and black/gray styles pictured here. It will be released from newbalance.com at 10 a.m. ET and can also be found from select retailers. Pricing is set at $125.
