‘Super Mario Bros.’ Sequel Officially Gets a Title

The Mushroom Kingdom is expanding once again.

The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that Universal Pictures, Illumination, and Nintendo announced the follow-up to 2023’s record-breaking The Super Mario Bros. Movie will be called The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.

The animated sequel is locked in for an April 3, 2026 release in the U.S., with a Japanese release scheduled for April 24, 2026 and additional international rollouts later that month.

The new title hints at a leap into fresh territory for Mario and Luigi. Fans of the video game series will immediately connect the name to Nintendo’s acclaimed Super Mario Galaxy titles, suggesting new worlds and adventures far beyond Brooklyn and the Mushroom Kingdom.

Returning to voice the iconic characters are Chris Pratt as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, and Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek. Additional casting announcements are expected in the months ahead, with Illumination confirming that more characters from the franchise will make their animated debut.

Behind the camera, Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic are back to direct after helming the first film. Screenwriter Matthew Fogel is also returning, while composer Brian Tyler will once again handle the score. Chris Meledandri of Illumination and Shigeru Miyamoto of Nintendo remain on board as producers, reinforcing the creative partnership that brought the first film to life.

That first outing was a global phenomenon, earning over $1.3 billion at the box office and becoming the highest-grossing video game film adaptation of all time.

It told the origin story of Mario and Luigi—two Brooklyn plumbers who stumble into the Mushroom Kingdom through a hidden pipe. With Princess Peach and Toad at their side, the brothers battled Bowser to save both worlds, solidifying the franchise’s return to the big screen.
