Kate Middleton Opts for Heirloom Pearls at the Duchess of Kent’s Funeral

The Princess of Wales often turns to heirloom jewellery for significant occasions—including at the Duchess of Kent’s funeral today. For the service at Westminster Cathedral, Kate opted for Queen Elizabeth II’s four-row pearl and diamond choker necklace, commissioned from Garrard, along with the late monarch’s diamond and pearl earrings, worn by the Queen during the Silver Jubilee celebrations back in 1977.

The Princess has worn sentimental pearls a number of times in recent years, including at Queen Elizabeth II’s own funeral in 2022, and Prince Philip’s funeral in 2021. Joining other senior royals for the funeral service today, Kate wore a black coat dress by Catherine Walker, featuring a bow at the collar, and a matching pillbox hat by Jane Taylor.

The Prince and Princess of Wales paid tribute to the Duchess of Kent following the news of her death on 4 September. “Our thoughts today are with The Duke of Kent and his family, particularly George, Helen and Nicholas,” a statement read. “The Duchess worked tirelessly to help others and supported many causes, including through her love of music. She will be a much missed member of the family.”

It’s a busy week for the royal family, who will be hosting Donald Trump and his wife Melania for a state visit in the coming days. Kate and William will greet the President and First Lady at Windsor Castle tomorrow, while Melania will join the Princess for an engagement with the Scouts at Frogmore Gardens on Wednesday.
