Keri Hilson Recalls Assisted Shroom Trip to Cure Depressi…

Keri Hilson counts psilocybin mushrooms as a remedy to her battle with depression.
The We Need to Talk: Drama singer was a guest on the September 11 episode of the Angie Martinez IRL podcast where she shared that the psychedelic substance alleviated helped her through medically assisted trips. Hilson has spoken about her past with depression before, particularly in being targeted by the BeyHive after releasing a diss song about Beyoncé in 2009. Following her 2010 album, No Boys Allowed, Hilson wouldn’t release another album until fifteen years later.
Around the 23-minute mark of the interview below, Hilson said that her life had become “dim” but she leaned on a spiritual “tribe” to alleviate her woes.
“And then I met a doctor who assisted me with shrooms, medicinal-grade shrooms, psychedelics. I can say without a doubt that I did two macro doses.”
The doctor suggested that Hilson do her research on mushrooms, as she was initially “scared” of drugs. “So I was very, very nervous but then I learned that there are retreats all around the world for shrooms being used medically as
healing modality, and all I can say is it worked for me.”
The singer-songwriter shared that her trip was “doc-assisted” and that she was “still reading articles” about the psychedelic compound when the trip began to kick in. “It was great ’cause it gave me comfort,” she explained. “Things are scary until you understand until you seek to understand them, right? They’re only as scary as when you aren’t informed or lack knowledge about it, right? The more I learned, the more comfortable I was.”
The “Knock You Down” artist recalled that she did two macro doses, but that her experience wasn’t “trippy,” although she wanted to listen to music and be outside during the eight-to-ten hour process.
“I remember passing a mirror one of the two times, and I realized I had been happy. But I passed a mirror and I saw a smile on my face and I’m like, ‘That’s weird,'” she added. “So I tried to wipe the smile off my face and I literally couldn’t ’cause I was like, That’s freaking weird. Like, the doctor’s here. I look I look nuts. I’m sure I look nuts.“
“And I try to like get serious and I couldn’t. I was just happy. And I hadn’t seen that in a while either. So, I was just kind of staring at it like, “Ah, this is what I look like when I’m little Keri.”
Afterwards, “things became clearer” for Hilson, who also felt “optimism.” “You still got to live your life,” she said. You still feel, but I have never been in a dark place for long or as dark since then. Like I can confidently say that cured my depression.”
Hilson also credited therapy, being on retreats and “building community” in her healing process.
