Cardi B broke down that viral lyric about Matthew McConaughey right to his face.
While guest hosting on Today with Jenna & Friends on Tuesday (Sept. 16), the rapper had the opportunity to talk to the Oscar winner about her verse she laid down for GloRilla and Megan Thee Stallion’s “Wanna Be” remix.
On the remix, released last May, Cardi raps, “I pop shit ’til a n****a gotta block me / And my toes white like Matthew McConaughey.” However, she opted to change the pronunciation to fit the rhyme scheme.
As seen in the video above, McConaughey, seated alongside Jenna Bush Hager, jumped right in with a grin, saying, “Yeah, ‘white toes!’ Talk to me.”
Cardi explained, “Well, you know, Megan Thee Stallion, she made a reference about, like, you know, fine white men. I was like, ‘Oh, fine white men. White toes, Matthew McConaughey.’”
The only hiccup, she admitted, was rhyming his name.
“But I say your last name wrong because I had to rhyme it,” she said, while stumbling over her words. “Mahkani, But I couldn’t say, it just was— it just wouldn’t fit. He a poet, he knows about it. He knows that we gotta fit it.”
McConaughey, who is currently promoting his new book Poems and Prayers and his upcoming film The Lost Bus, also recalled he first met the rapper five or six years ago at an Oscars party thrown by Madonna and her manager Guy Oseary.
The interview, which was part of Cardi’s robust promotional circuit for her new album Am I the Drama?, aired a day before the rapper revealed in a separate interview with Gayle King that she is currently expecting a child with boyfriend Stefon Diggs.
Although she didn’t provide specifics on her due date, Cardi said her child will arrive before her Little Miss Drama Tour is set to kick off in February.
Cardi B’s Am I the Drama? will be released on Sept. 19.
