95-Year-Old Woman Charged With Killing Roommate in Brookl…

A 95-year-old woman is facing murder charges after authorities say she violently attacked and killed her elderly roommate inside a Brooklyn nursing facility.

On Wednesday, Galina Smirnova was arraigned on counts of second-degree murder and fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon following the death of 89-year-old Nina Kravtsov at the Seagate Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Coney Island.

According to ABC News, police say staff allegedly discovered Kravtsov late Sunday night, covered in blood with severe injuries to her face and head. A criminal complaint stated Smirnova was allegedly found in the bathroom moments after the attack, washing blood from her hands.

The medical examiner reported that Kravtsov was rushed to a nearby hospital but died hours later from blunt force trauma. Investigators believe a wheelchair foot pedal, found bloodied on the floor of the room, was used as the weapon.

Kravtsov’s family described her as a Holocaust survivor who had lived through unimaginable tragedy, only to lose her life in what they called a senseless act of violence.

“Family is grieving in every sense of the word. It is my responsibility that justice is served for a woman that survived the Holocaust but could not survive a nursing home is dealt with correctly,” family attorney Randy Zelin said.

Smirnova appeared before a judge this week and was ordered held without bail. She has not entered a plea. The nursing home and Smirnova’s attorney have not responded to requests for comment.
