Marlon Wayans on Bad ‘Him’ Reviews: ‘Some Movies Are Ahea…

Marlon Wayans has spoken out about the critical reviews his new sports horror Him has received — and ultimately, he respects them.
Following its theatrical release on Friday (September 19), Him was met with poor reviews and a 36 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which has since dropped to 26 percent. The criticism was a shock for fans of Jordan Peele, as the Academy Award-winning filmmaker produced the Justin Tipping-directed horror.
Rather than hiding from the news, Wayans shared in an Instagram post previous low Rotten Tomatoes scores that his older comedies have gotten, like White Chicks, Scary Movie and A Haunted House.
“Just to be clear…” Wayans began in the caption. “I respect critics. Their job is to Critique. I respect their work. It shapes our industry. But an opinion does not always mean it’s everyone’s opinion.”
The actor and comedian added that “some movies are ahead of the curve,” as the examples he shared on IG are all considered cult classics despite facing initial scrutiny.
“Innovation is not always embraced and art is to be interpreted and it’s subjective,” he continued. “I’ve had a career of making classic movies that weren’t critically recieved (sic) and those movies went on to be CLASSICS.”
He concluded: “So don’t take anyone’s opinion just go see for yourself. Love to all. Him in theaters now.”
With a sixth Scary Movie installment currently in the works, White Chicks fans have demanded that Wayans and his older brother, Shawn, release a sequel to the 2004 comedy.
On a recent visit to The Breakfast Club, Wayans said he’d be up to give the movie another spin but would want to utilize AI so he doesn’t have to spend “seven hours” in whiteface makeup.
“Nah, AI is coming. So, I got to get in makeup two times, and then the AI will do the work. I’m down for that,” Wayans said in the episode. “But other than that, I want to do Black Man the movie where I come in, I do five minutes of makeup, and I get out of a 12-hour day.”
