Doja Cat Defines Her Sound as Pop Ahead of New Album

Doja Cat is setting the record straight on how she sees her music.

During a sit-down with CBS News Sunday Morning, the Grammy winner was asked which music genre best describes her sound and she offered a clear definition of it.

“Pop. I think I’m a rapper who makes pop music,” said Doja.

The genre clarification comes as fans gear up for her next era. Doja’s highly anticipated album Vieis set to arrive on Sept 26, marking her first full-length release since 2023’s Scarlet.

Details about the project have been kept mostly under wraps, but Doja has teased that the album will showcase her continued evolution as both a lyricist and a performer. In an interview with V Magazine, Doja explained that this album will see her return to her pop roots while adding influences of ’70s music.

“I wanted to play with that nostalgia by using these Lo-Fi sounds and samples and things that reminded you of something from your childhood, but it wasn’t on the nose ’80s,” said Doja.

Doja was also locked in on finishing the album as she had to pull out of this year’s Austin City Limits Festival. She explained her decision in her Instagram Stories, citing the demands of preparing the album.

“When I made the commitment, I didn’t know exactly when Vie would be released,” she wrote in her post. “I’ve been working on finalizing the album, making videos, taking the time to put together an album campaign that I am really excited about, and it’s become clear to me that I cannot give you guys the show you deserve within this time frame.”
