Florida Man Shoots Woman Over Card Game, Then Gets Beat U…
Authorities in Lake County say a 76-year-old Florida man is facing charges after a shooting that ended with him hospitalized and looking battered in his booking photo.
Michael Phillips was arrested on a charge of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon after deputies responded to a disturbance at a home on Sand Road in Grand Island.
According to an arrest affidavit obtained by Fox 35 Orlando, Phillips had shown up at the residence claiming the woman who lived there had invited him over to play cards. Witnesses confirmed he was permitted to enter the carport before the situation escalated.
Deputies said that once inside, Phillips turned to the homeowner’s wife, called her a “f***ing c***,” and then pulled a gun from his pocket. The weapon discharged, striking the woman in the forearm. She was transported to Orlando Regional Medical Center for treatment.
The woman’s husband quickly intervened, tackling Phillips to the ground. Witnesses told deputies that he managed to subdue Phillips and continued striking him until the firearm was secured. The same affidavit notes that the gun was placed on a table after being taken from Phillips.
Both the victim and Phillips were taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center — the woman for her gunshot injury, and Phillips for extensive facial trauma sustained in the altercation with the husband.
Investigators reported that when asked why he pulled out a gun, Phillips told deputies that “he had questions and believed that was the only way he would get answers.” He also insisted he thought it was legal to produce the firearm.
Phillips was later transported to the Lake County Jail, where he is being held on a $25,000 bond. His mugshot shows the extent of the damage from the fight, with his face visibly bruised and swollen.
The State Attorney’s Office is reviewing the case ahead of Phillips’ scheduled court appearance on November 10.
