Denzel Washington on ‘World of Opinionaires’ in Sports Me…

Denzel Washington, not content with gloriously dominating the pop culture news cycle with his Gladiator II press run last year, is at it again while out on the circuit in support of his fifth Spike Lee collaboration, Highest 2 Lowest.

For this particular article, we’re focusing on comments tucked into Denzel and Jeffrey Wright’s interview with Greg Cally for ESPN. Specifically, let’s zero in on the two-time Oscar winner’s assessment of sports media at large, which he described as being “a world of opinionaires,” and not, to be clear, in a flattering way.

“Everybody’s got an opinion,” Washington said, as seen below. “In fact, we live in a world of opinionaires. That’s what I call ‘em, opinoinaires. All the shows are a bunch of guys, a couple of them that have played but most of ‘em who haven’t, who have an opinion about what something should be when they haven’t done it. Those who can, do. Those who can’t, talk about those who can. Those who have know what they’re talking about. Those who haven’t don’t. Period.”

In Washington’s view, there’s simply “too much talking” going on at the moment.

“Everybody’s sitting around getting fat, thinking they know how to do it,” he added. “Just because you can sit behind a desk and chit-chat doesn’t mean you can do a damn thing. I’m serious. Come get up here with me. Let’s find out. Come get in the gym with me. Let’s find out.”

Adding a bit more, Washington, who recently had some criticism for Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, argued that “people need to shut up” and instead consider the following:

“Learn how to do something. Be actually good at something. Try that.”
