Halsey Slams Sydney Sweeney Haters Who Boycotted ‘America…

Halsey isn’t here for the drama that tanked Americana’s opening weekend.
According to The New York Post, the singer, who stars alongside Sydney Sweeney in the film, called out fans who decided to skip the movie after the actress’ controversial American Eagle campaign.
The ad, which played on the words “genes” and “jeans,” was blasted online for allegedly nodding to Nazi propaganda. That fallout led some people to boycott Americana altogether.
Halsey took to Instagram to defend the project, insisting it deserves to stand on its own. “You should go see this movie. Because [director] @tonytost made an exceptional film, in honor of a genre he knows intimately,” she wrote while sharing the poster. She doubled down by adding that the film is “greater than the 24 hr gossip tabloid denim bulls**t.”
She didn’t stop there. Halsey reminded followers that films are the product of dozens of people’s hard work—not just the face on a marketing campaign. “If you love cinema, then you should know that cinema comes first. This is cinema,” she said, before criticizing the coverage surrounding the controversy. “It’s not fair for the media to predatorily rip a hardworking director and his hardworking crew for their film that is completely separate from and unrelated to a (pretty dumb) advertising take.”
Her comments arrived just days after Americana’s disappointing debut. The movie grossed roughly $840,000 across 1,100 theaters nationwide, landing in 16th place at the box office with a $460 per-theater average.
Sweeney, meanwhile, has largely sidestepped questions about the denim campaign. American Eagle issued its own response, saying it would continue to back its jeans “with confidence, their way.”
In addition to the ad backlash, voter records revealed that Sweeney registered with the Republican Party of Florida in 2024, adding another layer of criticism to the mix.
