John Boyega Details What Went Wrong With ‘Star Wars’ Sequ…

John Boyega has outlined how his Star Wars sequel trilogy would go if he could do it all over again.
“It would be mad,” the actor said at Florida Supercon 2025 via Popverse when asked how he would personally remake the three films he featured in between 2015 and 2019. “If I was a producer on Star Wars from the beginning, you would have had a whole completely different thing.”
“First of all, we’re not getting rid of Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, all these people. We’re not doing that. The first thing we’re going to do is fulfill their story, fulfill their legacy. We’re going to make a good moment of handing on the baton.”
Boyega played ex-Stormtrooper turned Resistance fighter Finn in three Star Wars films: Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015), Star Wars: The Last Jedi (2017), and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (2019). While each film made over a billion at the box office, generating approximately $4.45 billion worldwide, they also received plenty of criticism.
“Luke Skywalker wouldn’t be disappearing on a rock,” Boyega continued. “Hell no. Standing there and he’s, like, a projector? I would want to give those characters way more.”
Boyega’s pitch is getting a lot of love on X. Commenters are showing support for his vision, as well his respect for classic Star Wars lore.
“I’d look to the Old Republic stories,” Boyega said. “And see what we can add to the continuation of that. I would definitely want to see Force Unleashed stories in there. I would try to expand the Star Wars universe as much as possible while respecting the lore. If we’re expanding the lore, we have to do it in within the respective boundaries that stay true”
“Our new characters will not be overpowered in these movies,” Boyega added. “They won’t just grab stuff and know what to do with it…No. You’ve got to struggle like every other character in this franchise.”
Boyega isn’t set to reprise his role as Finn anytime soon, which is maybe why he could be more open with his answer. The next Star Wars film is The Mandalorian & Grogu, which releases May 22, 2026.
