Shoes That Fit Adds D’Wayne Edwards to Advisory Board
Dr. D’Wayne Edwards is joining the advisory board of the nonprofit Shoes That Fit.
Dr. Edwards, who currently serves as president at Pensole Lewis College, Michigan’s only HBCU (Historically Black Colleges and Universities) and the only HBCU in the nation focused on design, said in a statement that he has long admired the organization.
“It is an absolute privilege to join their advisory board and contribute to the inspiring work they do for our children nationwide.” Dr. Edwards noted.
A national 501(c)3 nonprofit organization based in Claremont, Calif., Shoes That Fit provides children in need new athletic shoes to attend school. Named a California Nonprofit of the Year, Shoes That Fit delivered new athletic shoes to over 180,000 children across 50 states last year alone.
Amy Fass, chief executive officer and executive director of Shoes That Fit, added that Dr. Edwards is one of the most successful and influential designers in the shoe industry, while also one of the most committed to educating underserved youths across this country.
“His own personal story and commitment to empowering youth is exceptional,” Fass said. “No one understands Shoes That Fit’s importance more and we are proud to have him join our advisory board.”
Dr. Edwards is the founder of Pensole Footwear Design Academy and is also the founder of the first Black-owned footwear factory in the United States, JEMS by Pensole. He has held senior positions at brands like Jordan, Nike and Skechers and his designs have sold more than $1.5 billion worldwide. What’s more, Dr. Edwards is also the first African American to receive an honorary Doctor of Design from ArtCenter College of Design.
