What Google’s Latest Changes Mean for Complex Readers

In recent weeks, Google has announced a few changes to how users can customize search results.

Below, we take a look at some of these tweaks, as well as break down how Complex readers can prioritize our stories when digging for news.

Google introduces new features for Discover

This month, the company said it was updating its Discover feature to incorporate “more types of content” from publishers and creators, including X and Instagram posts. Users can also follow publishers and creators on Discover by signing in and tapping their name.

“With these updates, we aim to make Discover a more helpful jumping-off point for exploring the content you love,” Google reps said this month.

How to make Complex a preferred source in Top Stories

In August, Google launched a new search feature for users in the U.S. and India allowing for the selection of “preferred sources.” In short, user can pick their go-to sources, leading to that content being more “prominently displayed” in Top Stories.

To utilize the feature, users can search for any given news topic, then click the icon to the right of Top Stories. At this point, your own preferred sources can be selected.
